E. Standard Buffington

Served as mayor 1879-1880

Born in 1847, Dr. E. Stanard Buffington, the eldest son of Peter Cline Buffington and Eliza Jane Stanard Buffington, was one of the earliest physicians to practice in Huntington.

As a young man, he enrolled at Virginia Military Institute where he saw action with his fellow VMI cadets in the famous Battle of New Market. Later, he served as a midshipman in the Confederate Navy. After the war, he studied at Wesleyan College in Millersburg, Kentucky, and in 1872 earned his medical degree at Jefferson College in Philadelphia.

Dr. Buffington died in 1929.

On his death, The Herald-Dispatch eulogized him as “an outstanding exemplification of the family doctor type. He, like many of his fellows, went about doing good. He practiced for the love of humanity, going when and where he was called, and trusting upon the honor, generosity and ability of his patients for his pay. For those who could not pay he had the same interest and feeling, as for those who could and did.”
