Hendry A. Brandebury

Served as mayor 1899-1901

Born in Rio Grande, Ohio, in 1856, Hendry Andrew Brandebury became a popular Huntington surgeon. He was said to have performed the first successful appendectomy in Huntington.

He earned both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Rio Grande College and his degree in medicine from the University of Cincinnati. After receiving his medical degree, he set up practice in Huntington in 1891.

An ardent Republican, Dr. Brandebury was elected mayor in 1899.

It had long been the custom that the outgoing City Council would set the salaries of the incoming city officers. When Dr. Brandebury was elected mayor, the members of the outgoing Democratic City Council were so angered over the loss of the election they cut the salary of incoming Republican Brandebury to $10 per month.

When Brandebury won election to a second term his salary and the other city officers were restored to their previous sums.
