H.C. Gordon, an active civic leader, was elected mayor in 1901 and later would serve a second term in 1905-06.
It was during Gordon’s tenure as mayor that City Council moved to provide a lot on the northeast corner of 5th Avenue and 9th Street so the city could take advantage of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie’s offer to fund construction of a public library in Huntington.
